Located in Yates County, NY, the Penn Yan Fire Department has been in-service and fully volunteer since its inception in 1835. We cover the village of Penn Yan along with parts of 4 townships. PYFD also operates on mutual aid with departments in Yates County as well as departments in Ontario, Schuyler and Steuben Counties. Penn Yan Fire responds to over 300 calls a year. The department has a district of approximately 45 square miles and protects approximately 10,000 lives year round, this number increases to approximately 13,000 in the summer with lake residents. Penn Yan Fire and its dedicated volunteers stand ready at all times to protect the lives and property of the citizens in Yates County. |

The Penn Yan Fire Department and Hydrant Hose Company have taken delivery of its newest engine. Pierce was awarded the bid for their new Velocity chassis. The new Velocity chassis includes several features to promote firefighter and public safety. This will also be a first for the PYFD as it will include a top mount pump panel, this will aid in fire scene visibility and help the pump operator stay in constant contact with firefighters at all times. The engine will be in service by the second week of March when it returns from Churchville after retrofitting with our current equipment.

Around 2230hrs on New Year’s Eve Dresden Fire was dispatched to a reported house fire located on 70 Cornelia Street in the village of Dresden. Dresden Asst. Chief Warren Zimmerman went en route and requested and engine and man power from Penn Yan Fire. Dresden engine 25 called on scene and reported smoke showing with Dresden Chief Ted Cox confirming a working structure fire. PYFD Engine 1 arrived on scene and hand lines were stretched followed by Rescue M5 which established scene lighting. An aggressive interior attack was conducted. During operations two PYFD firefighters were injured. Lt. Bryan Housel was struck in the head by a blunt object and Steve Rapalee received a wound on his hand. Thankfully due to the full personal protective equipment both firefighters wore their injuries were minor. PYFD was on scene for more than two hours and responded with Engine 1, Rescue M5, 903, and 28 firefighters. Also assisting at the scene were Himrod Fire, Benton Fire (Fast Team), and Penn Yan Ambulance. |

On Monday December 10 at around 09:56 in the morning, Dresden Assistant Chief Zimmerman spotted a heavy column of smoke that he called in and was going to investigate. Upon arrival he called in a working truck fire with a car involved in the Penn Yan Fire Department district. Penn Yan responded with car 9-0, 9-02, E-1, E-3, TA -18, and M-5. Both vehicles were fully involved upon arrival. Assistant chief Simpson took command. The fire was under control in bout 10 minutes, but the department was on the scene for a little over an hour putting out hot spots on the tractor trailer cab. Both the tractor cab and the car were total losses. |

Saturday Nov. 17th Penn Yan Fire was dispatched to a standby duty with Ladder 4 for the City of Geneva Fire Department. Geneva Fire was enroute to Lyons for a warehouse fire. PYFD stood by for Geneva in the Genesee St. Station (Nester Hose, Folger Hook and Ladder, and Rescue 1171). PYFD was released in service at 1830hrs |
