EXPLOSION! PYFD responds to house explosion |

1700 HRS on Friday April 6th Penn Yan Fire was dispatched to a reported explosion inside a residence. Upon arrival Chief Housel reported significant damage to the structure, with a blast hole on side 1. Firefighters shut off the propane and then proceeded inside to find the home was full of propane. After the house was ventilated firefighters found a gas range pushed from the wall with a large hole behind the stove. Along with the damage to the wall many objects were thrown around 25ft, glass was shattered and the foundation was cracked. Luckily the elderly female who was cooking when the stove exploded only sustained minor injuries. Penn Yan Ambulance, Yates ALS, and Code Enforcement assisted at the scene. PYFD’s response included Engine 1, Engine 2, and Rescue M5. |

The Penn Yan Fire Department will be adding a new truck to its fleet. Pierce was awarded the bid for their new Velocity chassis. The new Velocity chassis includes several features to promote firefighter and public safety. This will also be a first for the PYFD as it will include a top mount pump panel, this will aid in fire scene visibility and help the pump operator stay in constant contact with firefighters at all times. Specifications include: 435 Cummings Diesel Allison 4000 Transmission Independent Front Suspension One Piece Asymmetrical Safety Windshield 1250 GPM 1000 Gallon Tank Husky 12 Foam System W/Onboard 30 Gallon Tank |

Penn Yan Responds Mutual Aid to Working Barn Fire
Himrod, NY - At 1330 hours tones where sounded for a requested mutual aid response. The call was initiated by Himrod Fire Dept. Chief Jared Webster who reported a fully involved barn located on route 14. Jared soon requested a tanker, engine and manpower from PYFD, Dundee Fire, and Dresden Fire. PYFD's response included TA-18, Engine 3, Rescue 5 along with several firefighters. It was soon determined that the barn was beyond saving and a defensive operation was initiated. PYFD helped knock down the fire within 2 hours with it's firefighters helping place lines into service and helping protect several exposures. During the fire fighting operations it was determined a horse had wandered into a frozen pond behind the barn, firefighters and civilians alike worked fast and were able to rescue the horse. The fire was not fully contained until 1445. PYFD was then released at 1600 after an extensive overhaul operation. |

Penn Yan Responds to a two car MVA
Barrington, NY - Penn Yan Fire/ Penn Yan Ambulance/ Dundee Ambulance were dispatched to a reported two car MVA located along Route 14A in Barrington, NY. Dispatch advised responding units there where multiple occupants ejected from their vehicle's. Rescue 5 and Engine 3 responded to the scene along with firefighters and conducted extraction and stabilization of victims. Timothy Freeland, 45; Kerry Freeland, 37; and their son 13-year old Russell Freeland, 13; all of Dundee, were pronounced dead at the scene. The occupants in the other car, K.D. Vanvalkenburg, 45, and Garrin Vanvalkenburg, 8, also of Dundee, were taken to Soldiers and Sailors Hospital in Penn Yan with arm and head injuries The Yates County Coordinator's Office conducted a Critical Incident Stress Debrief to help all responding personnel cope with the tragedy. |

Penn Yan Responds Mutual Aid to Working Garage Fire
Keuka Park, NY - At 1132 tones where sounded for a requested mutual aid response. The call was initiated by Branchport/Keuka Park Fire Dept. Deputy Chief Leigh Hibbard who reported a 30x30 structure fully involved, they requested a tanker and manpower from PYFD and Benton Fire. PYFD's response included TA-18, Rescue M-5 along with several firefighters. PYFD helped conduct a very aggressive offensive operation with it's firefighters helping place lines into service. The fire was not fully contained until 1239. PYFD was then released at 1400 after an extensive overhaul operation. Lost in the fire was a 30x30 shop with welding and various other equipment. |
